Lily Vedder grew up in southeastern Ohio. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Mount Vernon, Ohio in 2011. For graduate school, she decided to spread her wings and attend New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She obtained her Master’s degree in communication disorders in 2015. Her clinical fellowship was done in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in Harrisonburg, Virginia working with the birth to three years population. This experience helped to shape her family-centered and functional therapy approach. From there, she moved to central Ohio to work in a preschool for 6 years where she gained a holistic viewpoint. She has also had some experience in the in-patient and out-patient worlds primarily working with children. Lily has obtained her Clinical Certificate of Competency from the American Speech Language Hearing Association.

Experience

Although Lily is not a certified bilingual clinician, she has enjoyed using her Spanish skills to help service families from grad school and throughout her career. She is glad to encourage families to incorporate whatever languages are important to them and share her expertise in bilingualism. Lily also incorporates some simple signs from American Sign Language in her therapy sessions depending upon client’ needs.

Lily has worked with a variety of diagnoses including:

  • Autism
  • PKU
  • Cochlear Implants
  • Visually Impairment
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Apraxia
  • Diabetes
Working in preschool and elementary school settings has allowed Lily to gain insights into how the school systems work, experience with the Individual Education Plan which details special education services a student receives from the school, and the rights that families have. This has enabled her to help parents navigate transitioning from Early Intervention to preschool services as the child approaches their third birthday. She has also helped parents navigate the transition from preschool to kindergarten.

She has experience working with children from birth through elementary school age as well as coaching parents and families. Over the last couple of years, Lily has gained experience in working with alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) with children who do not communicate verbally. She was able to successfully help one family purchase a speech generating device for their child with their insurance.
