Screenings

If you are wondering whether your child has a speech or language difficulty, call or fill out the form to inquire about an over the phone or in-person 15 minute screening for speech or language concerns. Call me with your questions and concerns!

Evaluations

After a screening consultation we may proceed to a more in-depth analysis to determine whether your child has developmental delays or disorders in the areas of:

  • Language (Receptive and Expressive)
  • Articulation
  • AAC: need for alternative communication training/tools.
  • Evaluations are a flat fee of $250 which includes administration of tests and a written report of results.

Individual Sessions

Once we have the results of the evaluation we can develop a treatment plan for Individual Therapy Sessions and/or Parent/Caregiver Coaching sessions. You and Lily will decide the nature, frequency and duration of sessions. She offers 30 minute sessions for $50, 45 minute sessions for $75 and 1 hour sessions for $100. Session length and frequency are determined based on individual needs but are often 30 minutes once a week.

Types of Evaluations

Language Evaluation

There are two parts to language:

  • What we understand (receptive language)
  • What we say (expressive language).

These two parts of language are often talked about separately but they are actually linked together and not truly separate entities. We often have stronger receptive language skills than expressive language skills. Does your child have trouble understanding what others are saying, new words, or following directions? They might have a receptive language delay or disorder. Does your child have trouble putting words together, telling you their wants, needs, and thoughts, or do they mix up the order of words or use incorrect words? They might have an expressive language delay or disorder.

Articulation

Assesses how a child says speech sounds and how they use sounds in patterns as they say various words. As children learn to talk, they grow in their ability to say different sounds. They also learn how to say more complex words the older they get. There are a variety of reasons why children have a difficult time producing speech sounds including anatomical/structural reasons. Schedule an evaluation today to start a quest for clear speech.

Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC)

Some children have a difficult time learning to talk. Some children might try to tell you their needs, wants, and thoughts by gesturing and making various sounds. Other children might just take your hand and pull you to what they want. Some children (and adults) have a medical diagnosis that prevents or delays them from talking such as having a trach or suffering a stroke or a traumatic brain injury. These individuals may benefit from communicating in different ways such as sign language, pictures, or a speech generating device.

Call or email now to find out if your loved one could benefit from a different way of communicating. Lily will walk with you to figure out what way they might communicate the best. She will accompany you throughout the journey of deciding upon and learning how to use sign language, pictures, or a speech generating device.

Types of Therapy

Receptive / Expressive Language

Receptive language therapy helps children increase their understanding of what people say, grow their vocabulary, and follow directions better among other skills. Expressive language therapy helps children increase their vocabulary, talk in longer sentences, and speak in grammatically correct sentences among other skills.

Articulation

Speech therapy helps children learn how to say sounds correctly as well as how to use sounds in the correct patterns so that others can understand them more easily. Speech therapy addresses a wide variety of diagnoses including apraxia.

AAC

Using alternative and augmentative communication is a journey for individuals and their families/caregivers. During therapy sessions, children will learn how to effectively use AAC to communicate clearly with others. It can be helpful to think of AAC as similar to learning another language. It takes lots of time and practice to become fluent. The AAC modality (pictures, sign language, program to generate speech) can change as circumstances in life change. Call or email Lily today to enlist support on this communication journey.

Parent/Caregiver Coaching

Parents, families, and caregivers are an essential piece of speech and language therapy. Working with babies and toddlers up to three years old, Lily prefers implementing the coaching model of therapy. Preschool and elementary age children still need parent/family/caregiver involvement in therapy but the direct service model services them well.
